Thanks all for the comments. It looks like autumn (or fall depending on where you are) is the favourite time to plant garlic. I haven't quite got mine in yet. Have cleared a space so will get them in next weekend.

I always had better luck planting them in the fall (in Maine) whenever I tried to plant in spring, even early spring the cloves either never split or I ended up with tiny, shrunken bulbs. But if I planted in fall they would be nice healthy bulbs. I just had to make sure to plant them late enough, so that they didn't sprout too high.

Of course it depends on your location.
Here in the Pacific Northwest, I think Autumn is best. The Winter won't kill them. If the roots get a head start, they'll be that much better in the Spring. Since we're having a warm Fall I'm sure it's not too late.

Hi,

I planted my last batch of garlic out this weekend (we're in Scotland). I was a bit dubious about planting before winter (always have a bit of a 'winter kills all!!!' attitude) but I have been told that garlic likes a frost and that it is this 'freezing' that causes them to split into the seperate cloves. Certainly the ones I planted a few weeks ago are growing happily despite the weather recently!

I say go for it, even plany half now and half at your usual time, then compare for next year?

We planted garlic for the "first time" in our garden 3-4 weeks ago, some of them are like tall grass already. We got the garlic at the local farmers market. I have some from out local food coop produce isle that are huge($5 a lb) I'm planting them tomorrow.
